Eventbrite - Innovation Stories 2014

If the success of our first Innovation Stories is anything to go by, our second is going to be a knockout. For the next round, we welcome back John Willshire.

Don’t make people want things, says John; make things people want. Since founding innovation studio Smithery in 2011, he’s been helping companies like the Huffington Post, Royal Mail and Google do just that. He adopts a nimble approach to strategy and creative thinking across all disciplines, and Smithery’s first in-house product Artefact Cards (the intriguing, useful, lovechild of a post-it note and playing card) shows their commitment to generating better ideas.

Prior to founding Smithery, John spent seven years at PHD Media in London (as Head of Innovation and as Chief Innovation Officer) so there’s no way he’ll be short on innovation stories – all delivered in his dulcet Scottish tones.

This year he’ll be talking about Smithery’s work with the Saïd Business School (part of the University of Oxford), and their exploration of the Internet as a Material. The experiment, which ran as part of one of the world’s most prestigious leadership courses, looked at the Internet as “a base metal alloy lost within the whole of the experience” – so purring the Internet in experiences, rather than experiences in the Internet.

Alongside Tracey Camilleri of SBS, John will reflect on the transformative effect the experiment had on the participants, and how you measure human outputs rather than machine ones.
