When the 12 KB GIF Banner Was King
Since writing the article for the CSbook, the animated gif has become even less important to digital advertising. You can’t gamify a gif banner, put one on the app store or attach arduino to it (well maybe you can but I’m not going to try). But despite this, the animated gif refuses to die completely. Like me, you’ve probably noticed the occasional blog post crop up, showcasing photography enhanced with a tiny amount of animation. A couple of examples for you:

Something of a design fairy story this. The CBS cafeteria wall of the 1960's was until recently a lost typographic legend. 35 feet long by 8 feet wide it showcased a beautiful array white 3d lettering, created by Lou Dorfsman and Herb Lubalin. Rediscovered, it is now being restored in Atlanta with the aim of opening it to the public within the next two years. Nine Inch Nails have released a new album online. Similar to Radiohead they've gone against convention, opting instead to give fans the first nine tracks of 'Ghosts I-IV' for free, along with a downloadable 40 page pdf of photography. for the record it isn't nosebleed industrial, but quite atmospheric instrumental stuff. The other 27 tracks are only $5, with the artist only making money out of a limited edition boxed set which can't be duplicated. Its another small step for an industry taking a battering from peer to peer file sharing. ...
